Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise, particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia – an enduringly happy land, isolated from the world. Hilton portrays Shangri-La as a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains. Shangri-La is a fictional place in Tibet's Kunlun Mountains (昆仑山), described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by English author James Hilton.
